Maritime began as 1/2 The Promise Ring - Davey and Dan with 1/3 The Dismemberment Plan Eric Axelson. One would expect similarities to The Promise Ring - however Davey and Dan managed to create a unique sound of indie pop. The debut EP titled Adios was released in 2003 of Foreign Leisure - the bands own label. The EP was just a start up for the full length premier of The Glass Floor - a witty, earnest display of pop punk - very clear a new beginning for members coming from prestigious bands. Not dissimilar to The Promise Ring - Maritime spend some time on the road building their name - and spending some time at smaller venues for a change. In 2006 after much deliberation Maritime left Desoto and found Flameshovel to release their follow up We, The Vehicles. The only hint of the bandmembers' former lives comes in the lyrics, which occasionally show flashes of the caustic wit and tendency towards mopery that was the hallmark of the Promise Ring even at their poppiest- We, the Vehicles is clean - well polished while Maritime’s debut full-length was layered with strings and keyboards over the band’s core guitar-bass-drum combination, their sophomore record is a back-to-basics fanfare. This album would be the last for Eric Axelson. Upon the release Maritime struggled to fill the position of Eric - borrowing Mike Kinsella and Matt Clark among others to help temporarily fill the gap. Things settled, as things do. Justin Klug took the four-string slot, and longtime contributor Dan Hinz—he played guitar on Vehicles—became full-fledged member. In 2006 Maritime released their first album with a new line-up - Heresey and the Hotel Choir. Heresy strips the band of any and all ties to modern music and trends to come across as nothing but a pop record.
